January 2022 Round-up

Happy New Year! Within the blink of an eye the last full week of January draws to a close. It has been a strange first month of 2022, with a lot of staff at the Trust unwell with Covid-19 and changes in the management teams across the UHN group digital team.

I have spent a significant proportion of my month writing the N365 Phase 2 business case for the next financial year. It has been exciting to scope out what the next Office 365 services will be, and learn from the work of other Trusts. I have found case studies of the application of Hololens in a healthcare setting of particular interest. This case study from Imperial College was inspiring, and could bring huge benefits to colleagues and patients at KGH.

It has been a month of frustratingly small progress for our Office 365 programme. Due to issues with our deployment platform, we have been constrained to upgrading PCs manually. That said, we have made good progress defining the plan for upgrading the remainder of our PCs, which primarily belong to Enterprise 3 Restricted (E3R) licensed users who will be “Office 365 online” users in our new world. We were hoping to undertake a pilot to review if any tweaks are needed to our communications and training strategies, but unfortunately this has been put on hold until the issues with automating our upgrades are resolved.

Elsewhere, it’s been fantastic to hear about the benefits of our countywide shared medical record for frail patients. We had the below feedback from one of our GPs, which was so heart warming to read. Qualitative benefits like this are the reason I joined the NHS and do the job I do.
“This allowed me to call the consultant and within minutes support the discharge plan of an individual with incredibly complex needs. ICT was involved and comprehensive escalation criteria around physical observation parameters were agreed and someone who, historically, would have ended up admitted and possibly suffered harm as a result is now home and safe.”

Lastly, I spent some time reading up on the Trust’s draft green plan, and the broader green plan for the NHS. I was shocked to learn the NHS is responsible for 4% of the country’s carbon emissions. It was interesting learning about the work at other Trusts, namely Milton Keynes University Hospital who had exploited the vast flat roofs many hospitals have to provide a renewable energy source for the hospital. As an Earth and Environmental Sciences graduate, I’m really hoping to get involved in this work to align my passions in our planet and of delivering change that makes a difference. With innovative thinking, we can start to make a huge difference in reducing our impact on the planet.

I am hopeful next month will see a significant ramp up in our Office 365 upgrade pace, particularly with the ever looming deadline to remove Office 2010 by 30th April 2022. I am also looking forward to capturing more of the benefits from our Frailty team as we complete further post go-live optimisation work.
